The Baroque style was born in the early 17th century in Rome before spreading across Europe where it flourished. This unique style used contrast, exuberant detail, rich colours and grandeur to achieve awe. It then evolved into an even more flamboyant style by the mid 17th century.
Many of London's oldest buildings are built in the Baroque style characterised by its ornate detail. Distinct from its European equivalent (due to Henry VIII separation from the Catholic Church), English builders were often content with the colours of their materials while European builders often added paint or stucco to the exterior of their buildings.
